Resume Whilst
at college I found my musical life diversifying, studying towards becoming an
orchestral flautist, whilst working in the commercial world of dance bands
(with bandleaders such as Nat Temple, Sidney Lipton, Eric Delaney and the
legendary Joe Loss), working in the London hotels backing numerous Cabaret
artists and on P&O cruise ships (both in dance-bands and as a
"classical" recitalist). The benefits of having experienced working
for and alongside such a variety of musicians has led to an ability to cross
over many musical styles. Upon leaving college in 1976, I was a founder member of the Myhra
Saxophone Quartet along with John Harle, the flautist for Ballet Rambert's
Mercury Ensemble, playing at the National Theatre in a variety of shows and
working for session "fixers" on commercial projects. I soon found
myself deputising in many West End musicals, once again taking advantage of
dance band and orchestral experience, working on shows of different styles,
on either flute alone or as a clarinet/sax/flute "doubler". I also
began appearing with the major London and provincial orchestras as an "extra".
I developed an interest in “ethnic” instruments as they became more and more
part of modern film and television scores. The
early 80's saw the start of my work in the "Michael Nyman Band",
with whom I still tour and record, and a most enjoyable period as a member of
the folk-rock band, "The Home Service", recording albums with them
and appearing at leading folk festivals. Recent
years have included work in new Andrew Lloyd Webber productions,
"Whistle Down The Wind", "The Beautiful Game", for which
I was named in the Sunday Times review, “Bombay Dreams” and “The Woman In
White”. I'm also busy in the
studio, as a principal orchestral flautist, woodwind doubler
,"ethnic" instrumentalist and Contra-Bass Flute specialist! In
July 2003 the debut concert of the John Harle Saxophone Quartet took place,
(John Harle, Simon Haram, Christian Forshaw and myself). I've
been involved in the workings of the Musician's Union, having served in the
early 90's for two years on the Executive Committee and still now on both the
Session Section and Central London Branch Committees. I've taken part in many
rounds of negotiations with various employers. |
